Nestled in an enchanting corner in the Lierza valley, in the Treviso municipality of Refrontolo, the Molinetto della Croda is an ancient water mill, a small rural jewel that tells the story of this region. Its original foundations rest directly on the rocky wall behind it and next to it flows the stream in a fairytale waterfall.
The history of Molinetto della Croda
Built in 1630 to exploit the waters of the Lierza stream, the ancient building was later expanded to obtain accommodation for the caretaker’s family, a barn and a stable. Life at the mill has never been easy for the modest generations of millers, always struggling with sudden and devastating floods but its activity continued until after the Second World War, grinding the last flour in 1953.
After several years of abandonment, the municipality bought the property, and today thanks to scrupulous restorations, it is in all respects a local cultural heritage as well as a house-museum that can be visited all year round.
The Molinetto della Croda in art and cinema
Many artists have been fascinated by this place that preserves the traits of the past, among others, also the well-known Venetians Angelo Lorenzon and Tiziano D’Agostin who have chosen it for numerous pictorial representations. In 1977, the mill also served as the backdrop to the film “Mogliamante”, starring Marcello Mastroianni.
Visit the Molinetto della Croda
Today the mill is a reference point for the rediscovery of the 17th century rural culture of the March of Treviso. Inside you can visit a museum that explains the history of milling and of the territory, and which periodically hosts exhibitions, including art ones. For trekking enthusiasts, on the other hand, there are trails all around the building, which lead to the discovery of fascinating itineraries, immersed in the still pristine nature of the place.
